Yale University and the City of New Haven share a history stretching back over three centuries. Yale University students, staff, and faculty comprise an important part of the New Haven community, and those who choose to engage themselves in community affairs join in a 300 year old Yale tradition of scholarship and civic contribution. 70% of Yale students set aside time each year to share their unique talents with our New Haven neighbors, and we encourage you to enrich your Yale experience by working with the community of New Haven during your time in our company. The web sites below are by no means comprehensive, but they do provide a starting point for information on volunteer opportunities ranging from literacy programs like America Reads and New Haven Reads to soup kitchens. The Yale Office of New Haven & State Affairs is the front door to Yale for the people and organizations of Greater New Haven. Working with other University departments and neighbors in New Haven, ONHSA spearheads Yale's partnerships to strengthen New Haven through economic development, neighborhood revitalization, public school and youth programs, and a vital downtown. Undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students interested in contributing their skills to public sector and nonprofit organizations in the City of New Haven can apply for paid summer internships via the Yale President's Public Service Fellowship Program. Founded in 1886, Dwight Hall at Yale is an independent, non-profit umbrella organization that engages over 3,000 undergraduates in public service and social action each year. Its mission is "to foster civic-minded student leaders and to promote service and activism in New Haven and around the world." Dwight Hall is a wonderful resource for students interested in volunteer opportunities and paid summer public service internships. Committee Overseeing Volunteer Services (COVS): The Health Professional Schools Community Service Programs developed this web site to facilitate the search for volunteer opportunities at community service groups. Over 85% of medical students participate in at least one community service experience while at Yale, and this site contains names, descriptions and contact information for many of the community service groups currently working in New Haven. The School of Medicine web site features an extensive list of Community Service Organizations, including organization descriptions, information on how to get involved with the group, and the time commitments required. |
